Rolling Stone Top 500: #s 495-491

495– Boyz II Men , II

A 90’s R&B classic. I remember the songs from this album being all over the radio when I was in junior high and listened to a lot of 97.9 The Box here in Houston. Listening to it now, there are some bonafide classics like “I’ll Make Love to You,” “On Bended Knee,” and “Water Runs Dry.” In spite of those tracks, this is just an OK album

494 — The Ronettes, Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes

This is a very decent, but forgettable record. There are some catchy tunes here, and it is always cool to hear Phil Spector’s wall of sound production, but this is not an album I am likely to revisit.

493 — Marvin Gaye, Here, My Dear

Marvin Gaye albums are always worthwhile. His smooth, soulful vocals and some classic Motown arrangements make for an enjoyable listen. This breakup album (made in the wake of his divorce) is not as essential as some of his other work that will show up later in the countdown, but still a solid album.

If you listen to one song: Sparrow

492 — Bonnie Raitt, Nick of Time

A rock solid blues/rock record, like most everything put out by Raitt. It’s a good listen. I didn’t reach for the skip button. But, it is also one that I am unlikely to revisit often.

491 — Harry Styles, Fine Line

This is one of the contemporary albums that made the updated 2020 list after being released in 2019. It is not a terrible album as it does have some catchy tracks. However, I am not sure it is a good album either. I can’t help but think that whatever they removed from the list to make room for this album had to be better.
